Cake Smash Photography Packages
Rustic Outdoor Cake Smash
Classic Cake Smash
Studio cake smash sessions come with pre-set inclusions and are held in our Kambah studio. We provide a basic buttercream smash cake, a simple neutral backdrop, and a warm bubble bath at the end. If additional props or decorations are desired, parents are welcome to discuss this with us and provide these for inclusion in advance of the cake smash shoot. Sessions typically take 1 hour (with breaks as needed) and include pre-smash portraits of your baby clean, portraits of your baby exploring and playing with the cake, and portraits of your child enjoying a warm bubble bath. Clients receive a comprehensive session guide, a short planning questionnaire, and a pre-session phone consultation. In our experience, babies prefer to play with the cake in short bursts rather than eat it. Some staging is necessary and parents should prepare to get messy! Family photos are not included in our studio cake smash, due to the backdrop being scaled to a baby and the time involved in capturing family photos.

If you are purchasing a custom-made outfit, be sure to account for the supplier’s production and shipping times. Our delivery timeframe for digital images (excluding prints) is up to 3 weeks. Please keep these timelines in mind when scheduling your canberra cake smash photography booking.

When you arrive, I will take a slow approach with your baby. I won’t acknowledge your baby or make eye contact with them at all. We will all sit on the ground together and chat, rolling a ball back and forth. I’ll then take a photo of both parents pulling silly faces, and show it to you all. This shows your baby that It’s ok that I’m present and a camera won’t hurt them. The aim is to have your baby initiate interaction rather than forcing my presence on them. I will play with them for a short period and then transition them to the set-up. Once they are comfortable, I will start taking photographs. If your baby is very anxious about new people, please let me know ahead of time so I can adapt my approach.
Most babies prefer to play with the cake rather than eat it. Some babies prefer not to touch the cake at all and instead drum on it with a spoon. Some prefer to eat hidden favorite snacks on the ground behind the cake or pull hidden objects out of the cake. All babies love the splash and play.
There’s a fair bit of staging behind the scenes and breaks for the baby. Studio babies play in small bursts, then crawl off-set, randomly explore, and do yoga moves with balloons. They need to be redirected multiple times. Parents can expect to be handling a fully buttercream-smothered baby, assisting with breaking the cake apart and staging a few shots. Pro tip – bring a change of clothes, especially if you need to go somewhere after the shoot!
Before the session, introduce your baby to the wonders of buttercream icing with two generously frosted cupcakes. Here’s the plan: Have a parent sit down (on the floor like your baby will be doing) and play with one cupcake—dip those fingers into the icing, get a little messy, sniff, taste, and squish it up! Meanwhile, leave the second cupcake untouched for your baby to explore when ready.
The goal is for your baby to watch a parent undertake this activity, get curious, and dive in at their own pace. No need to push their hands into the cake or smear icing on them— it’s very important to let them decide if and when they’re ready to join the fun. If they’re unsure, give it a few days and try again. You may need to repeat it over several days.
I recommend cutting tags off clothing and letting your baby wear it before the session. Avoid birthday hats with elastic, they stay on for a nanosecond before a baby stretches the elastic and snaps it painfully on their skin, then we have tears. Avoid putting things in your child’s hair or fussing with their hair during the session unless they are used to it. Don’t bring multiple outfits, outfit changes cause tears.
Sippy cup of water & bottle
Change mat & towel
Extra nappies & wipes for clean faces and hands
Zip-lock bag for the messy cake smash outfit
Going-home outfit for your little star and change of clothes for yourselves
A snack your baby loves that can be hidden in the back of the cake
Hair and outfit – Dress your baby and style their hair before you arrive. This helps avoid tears and associating the experience with something negative. Let’s keep the session fun and stress-free for your baby from the start.
Toys – Please do not bring toys unless you want them featured in your photographs.
I hear this question a lot! So, let me share something with you—I’m a proud mother of two autistic children. I’ve guided my little ones through public meltdowns, navigated shutdowns, and learned to let go of judgment. What matters most is meeting their needs. I’m never embarrassed, and you shouldn’t be either. You’re doing an incredible job—I see you!
Let’s talk about babies and their Velcro stage. You know the one—when Mum is their whole world and everyone else is highly suspicious. Add in teething, bright lights, a new place, and a camera-wielding stranger making silly noises. Suddenly, this fun little adventure feels pretty overwhelming from their tiny perspective!
But here’s the secret: Trust the process. Be flexible with expectations. Babies are unpredictable—sometimes they’ll flip from frowns to giggles in a heartbeat. And that’s okay!
If your baby is heading in the direction of a meltdown, we’ll pause. I’ll dim the lights, lower the noise, and create a calm, cozy space. We’ll clean their hands, offer a drink, let Mum give a squishy hug, and slow things down. Then, we’ll reintroduce the fun with a wooden spoon to drum on the cake instead of squishing. If the cake is a big no for your baby, let’s remove it, play with balloons and blow bubbles instead.
Here’s the truth:
- Most babies cry at some point during the session.
- Most won’t eat the cake (they’d rather play with it or drum on it!)
- Most babies find the studio more interesting than the cake. Bring a change of clothes, you’ll be repositioning them multiple times, while the opposite can be said for outdoor shoots.
- I can’t promise your baby will smile or make eye contact in every photograph
But guess what? In my ten years of photographing babies, I’ve never met a single one who didn’t love the bubble bath finale.
So, breathe easy. Melt-downs, messes, and mayhem? All part of the magic. And trust me—we’ll capture every bit of it beautifully.

Within three weeks after your shoot (a little longer if public holidays fall during that time), you’ll have access to a private online gallery to view and select your images. These images will be shown in low resolution with a watermark for your selection. Once you’ve made your choices and shared them with me, you’ll receive a download pin. If you need your images by a specific date, be sure to account for processing times. Please note: we are closed for Christmas and New Year, any sessions shot less than three weeks before December will not be delivered until the second week of January.
Need your images by a specific date? Please plan and factor in these timeframes when booking.
Get ready for a smashing good time! Our cake smash packages feature a delightful giant cupcake with a white chocolate base, fluffy vanilla cake, and creamy buttercream icing. To ensure your little one’s safety, please introduce them to cake and buttercream icing multiple times before the session to check for any allergies. If this hasn’t been done, I won’t be able to provide a cake and will kindly ask you to bring one instead.
If your little one has any allergies to common cake ingredients like eggs, milk, or gluten, please let me know in advance— I’m happy to work with you to find a suitable alternative.
Please also let me know if your baby has any skin sensitivities to regular bubble bath mixtures.
A cake smash photography session is a full sensory experience, combining sticky textures on little hands with an unfamiliar setting, bright studio lights, new sounds, smells, and a stranger behind the camera. It also comes with a perception of touching, eating, and making a mess with cake—something babies rarely actually do or see their families doing. Proper preparation is essential for a successful cake smash photography shoot.
In baby development, the fight, flight, and freeze response is a key function of the central nervous system (CNS), helping infants react to unfamiliar or overwhelming situations. Babies are born with an immature nervous system, and their ability to regulate stress responses develops over time.
- Fight: A baby might cry, arch their back, or push away when overstimulated.
- Flight: Turning their head, looking away, or attempting to move away.
- Freeze: Becoming still, wide-eyed, or zoning out in response to stress.
Understanding these responses can help caregivers create a comforting environment, especially in new experiences like cake smash photography, where some babies may initially feel unsure due to unfamiliar sights, people, sounds, and textures. Parents can assist by participating in and gradually exposing a baby to messy, sticky, tactile play with cooled mashed potatoes leading up to the session.
- Choose adorable plain bloomers for that classic, sweet vibe.
- Go for suspenders with plain shorts or suspenders with plain bloomers for an irresistibly vintage look.
- Pick sleeveless rompers, frilled rompers, flutter rompers or short overalls. Plain linen or cotton creates a timeless look.
- Match the outfit with the cake or balloons to create a seamless look.
- Avoid busy patterns this takes the focus off the star of the show and will date
- Pro Tip: Don’t forget to pack a going-home outfit — a mess everywhere is guaranteed!
Our Studio Cake Smash Package includes (20) 5×7″ loose color prints to cherish those adorable, frosting-filled moments. (Please note: Rustic cake smash sessions do not include prints.)

A session fee is a non-refundable retainer paid at the time of booking. It’s included in the pricing above and not an additional fee. The retainer covers all pre-shoot work, including emails, administrative tasks, consultation, planning, purchasing consumables, and setting up. These amounts are non-refundable in the event of a cancellation. If you need to reschedule due to illness, we can accommodate a change with at least 24 hours’ notice, however, a fee of $80 applies to re-order the cake. Please note that additional rescheduling requests will be treated as cancellations, as we reserve your session time exclusively for you and forego income by not booking other families in your spot.
Family photos are not included in our studio cake smash, due to the backdrop being scaled to a baby and the time involved in capturing family photos.
Immediate family including siblings are welcome to attend Rustic Outdoor Cake Smash sessions but please don’t bring an audience beyond this. While we’d love to have siblings attend Studio Cake Smash Sessions, there is limited space and in my experience, too many people moving around and calling out leads to your child not interacting with the cake, staring up toward the ceiling, and not looking in the direction of the camera.
A print release provides the artists permission to reproduce digital images in printed form. A print release does not transfer copyright or provide permission to modify images.
We put in hours of planning, designing, and sprinkling our special artistic magic on your photos. Just like other pro photographers, we don’t hand out raw, unedited files. We like to keep a little of that magic under wraps
I’d love to offer a discount, but my camera is only set to capture full-price smiles! um, in seriousness the time spent photographing is just a small part of the whole experience—there’s a lot more that happens behind the scenes. As with any business, there are ongoing costs involved in providing a service, and while it might seem like we just press a button, there’s so much more to it. On average, a photographer spends around 8 hours preparing, editing, and handling everything from admin to marketing, accounting, sourcing props, and responding to inquiries. We also price according to experience. As a sole trader with a family to support, I’m unable to adjust pricing. Thank you for understanding and thank you for booking your canberra cake smash photography session.
