Is Newborn Photography Safe?
Safety and the comfort of your baby is prioritized above everything else at your session. We follow each baby’s lead with what they are and aren’t comfortable doing and will never force them into a pose that causes them distress or compromises their safety. Specific poses require the hands of an assistant to support a baby into position with the end result achieved through advanced composite editing techniques to remove hands post-process.
Our photographer Bronwyn, is trained in all aspects of newborn safety, having completed one-to-one in-person training and workshops. Bronwyn is a graduate member of the International Newborn Photography Association, has 10 years of experience, is insured, registered, fully immunized, and has an established health and safety policy. In addition, Bronwyn has completed Infection Control Training for COVID-19 with the Australian Government Department of Health and has an established COVID-safe plan. We adhere to best industry practices for newborn safety during sessions and will:
- never leave a baby unattended in a prop or on a newborn posing bag
- never force a baby into a pose
- use composite editing for poses, props, and positions that require an assistant’s hands supporting the baby
- will always use the safety strap on the camera
- will never put a baby inside a glass prop or inside a prop that could break
- will never leave a sibling unattended with a newborn
- will recommend that siblings do not attend the full session duration to enable the photographer to focus entirely on your newborn’s safety.
When should newborn photos be taken
Newborns are best photographed in unwrapped posed positions in the first 3 weeks of life. Apart from being very sleepy and easily settled, babies this new can hold their legs curled to the chest which keeps them modest when being photographed nude. Less posed results can be expected in unwrapped positions (unwrapped photos are unavailable for our mini package) for older babies over 3 weeks to 6 weeks. A newborn mini session is done with your baby fully wrapped rather than loosely draped in a wrap and can be done up until six weeks by which time most newborns grow out of newborn props.
When is the best time to book a newborn session?
Posed newborn photography is time sensitive. Best posed results are achieved in the first 3 weeks of life with less posed more natural results expected for babies over 3 weeks to 6 weeks of age. We recommend booking in after your 12 week scan to ensure availability in the first 3 weeks after birth. When babies are still this fresh we can comfortably sculpt them into the classic posed newborn photography positions you see in our portfolio. Newborns under 3 weeks are less aware of being frequently moved and adjusted, are easily settled and are still flexible enough to hold their legs curled up to the chest in fetal position thus keeping them modest when unclothed. This makes the experience much more comfortable for them, gives you the opportunity to pay in installments or even let friends and family know they can contribute to the cost as a gift.
We welcome older babies up to 6 weeks old with the understanding that our sessions are baby led and less posed more natural side and back positions are possible after 3 weeks.
Parents of older newborns can expect beautiful awake moments, close-ups of a newborns gaze, semi posed positions suited to an awake moving baby and wrapped sleepy portraits in props.
For safety reasons, forward facing poses require a newborn to be very asleep and relaxed. We incorporate the same newborn props and styling into older newborn sessions, adapting posing to your baby’s level of alertness, comfort and safety.
What is posed newborn photography?
Posed newborn photography takes place in a warm, clean, distraction free studio with consistent soft beautiful light and professional newborn posing equipment. Posed newborn photography requires training to understand newborn physiology and safe posing techniques which is different to general handling of a newborn baby. The photographer takes care of everything, and there is no home styling stress involved.
Lifestyle photography takes place in your home without newborn props or newborn posing. This means your home becomes the backdrop and baby is mostly held in photographs. It involves more preparation and involvement from parents in preparing the home and throughout the session and has a distinct disadvantage when it comes to light and controlling the environment.
The biggest difference between these styles is where the focus lies.
Lifestyle sessions capture the family experience in the home, with your newborn as part of the overall story rather than the focus – similar to a family session but in your home.
Posed newborn photography, on the other hand, is designed to showcase your baby’s tiny details in a more artistic and curated way through with relaxed family photos also included. Think dreamy, curled-up poses, soft swaddles, and beautifully controlled lighting, while still incorporating family photos where your baby is the focus.
Why do photographers wrap babies?
Newborns are curled up tight and snug in utero rather like having the security of a big hug around them at all times. When a baby is born, that constant hug is gone and they spend that first couple of months adapting to the sounds, senses and spaces around them When a baby is startled, experts compare this to the feeling of dreaming you are falling and waking yourself up. A newborn will suddenly fling their arms and legs out, arch their back and then curl everything in again. Most newborn babies will cry and wake in response to this startle reflex, otherwise known as the Moro Reflex. In a photography context when a baby is not being held by a parent, the aim is to capture variety of images to choose from, Swaddling a baby mimics the confines of a womb and is soothing and calming for them. This enables the photographer to progress through the session with your baby calm and relaxed, weather that be asleep or awake.
What should I dress my baby in?
Your newborn will be unclothed or wrapped for much of the session. Our studio is kept very warm for your baby’s comfort. Flowing wraps and careful positioning of legs keep our little clients modest at all times. No outfits are necessary, unless you have a special outfit or family heirloom you’d like included.
Whats Included?
Our focus is creating unique artful images photographed with purpose rather than providing bulk snapshots with minimal difference between frames. All newborn sessions include use of our existing range of specialty sourced wraps, blankets, backdrops, hand felted layers, wool layers, prop fillers, hair flowers, bonnets and accessories. Mini newborn sessions are fast paced and include wrapped only portraits (i.e. arms, legs, body concealed in a snug swaddle) of your baby in props plus parent portraits. The full newborn and digital only packages include non-wrapped portraits (best posed results up to 3 weeks with less posed results expected for babies over 3 weeks to 6 weeks), wrapped portraits in props and a selection of family images incl. of immediate family up to 5 persons. Images are individually hand retouched and presented for selection in a private online viewing gallery. All clients receive a pre-session consultation, comprehensive session guide, ongoing communication and a design questionnaire to personalize the experience.
Are prints included?
The luxe package includes a custom made 20″ x 20″ framed collage to hand on your wall containing four images. Custom wall art, loose prints, matted prints or enlargements are available to purchase separately. We don’t have awkward in person ordering appointments. The products are optional and available to purchase if desired. We can of course help you with sizing and recommendations on products to suit your lifestyle and budget if asked but the products are totally optional with a no push approach from us.
What products do you offer?
We offer fine art print enlargements, personalized boxed sets of fine art prints in acid free mount boards, personalized artisan albums, personalized boxed sets of prints, floating premium metal wall mounts, floating acyrilic wall mounts, traditional framed fine art prints, fine art canvas stretched over a hardwood frame and budget friendly poly composite canvas stretched over a pine frame.
What is a session fee?
A session fee is a non-refundable retainer paid at the time of booking. It’s included in the pricing above and not an additional fee. The retainer covers all pre-shoot work, including emails, administrative tasks, consultations, planning, and setting up. These amounts are non-refundable in the event of a cancellation. If you need to reschedule due to illness, we can accommodate a change with at least 24 hours notice. Please note that additional rescheduling requests will be treated as cancellations, as we reserve your session time exclusively for you and forego income by not booking other families in your spot.
Are family included?
Two adults are included in the mini package. Immediate family (two adults and siblings) are included in the classic and luxe package. Family photos occur in the last 30 minutes of the session. Siblings are welcome to arrive after I have captured individual newborn photos.
Are siblings welcome?
Siblings participating in the classic and luxe package are welcome to attend the family portion of the shoot in the last 30 minutes of the session. This is a perfect amount of time to maintain their enthusiasm and to capture the connection between siblings and family.
My baby is over 6 weeks weeks old
Posed newborn photography works best for babies between 0-3 weeks old, as they are still in that cozy, curled-up, sleepy phase. While we can accommodate babies up to 6 weeks, please keep in mind that the photos will have a more natural, relaxed feel rather than the perfectly posed ones. After 6 weeks, babies grow out of props and may not be as comfortable or safe in posed positions. Additionally, older babies tend to stay awake and move around more. A wonderful alternative is around 4 months, when babies can hold their heads up, enjoy tummy time, and roll from back to front. This stage not only adds variety beyond typical top-down shots of facial expressions but also helps prevent forehead shadows that can happen when babies are unable to support their heads.
Can I have the RAW images?
Many hours are invested into planning, designing, artistically editing and presenting your images. We do not supply RAW unedited images, as is the case with most respected professional photographers.

Can I have a discount?
Capturing images at the session is a smallest portion of the overall service and time spent on each project. Like all business, there are also several ongoing costs involved in delivering a service and we are unable to negotiate pricing.
What is your delivery timeframe?
Within three weeks after your shoot (a little longer if public holidays fall during that time), you’ll have access to a private online gallery to view and select your images. These images will be shown in low resolution with a watermark for your selection. Once you’ve made your choices and shared them with me, you’ll receive a download pin. The gallery will stay active for two weeks. If your package includes a framed print, please allow up to six weeks for it to be custom-made and printed. If you need your images by a specific date, be sure to account for processing times. Please note: we are closed for Christmas and New Year, any sessions shot less than three weeks before December will not be delivered until the second week of January.
